The Grand Trunk Road

A journey from Kabul to Dhaka across centuries of trade, war and culture.

What Is The Grand Trunk Road?

The Grand Trunk Road (G.T. Road) is one of the oldest and longest roads in South Asia, stretching over 2,500 kilometers from Kabul in Afghanistan to Dhaka in Bangladesh. For centuries, it has been a lifeline of trade, culture, and conquest – connecting empires, marketplaces, and generations of travelers. From Sher Shah Suri’s imperial highway to the colonial era and modern-day highways, the road has witnessed shifting borders and enduring histories.

Today, the Grand Trunk Road remains more than just asphalt – it is a living archive of the subcontinent’s past, running through ancient cities, military outposts, rivers, and roadside dhabas.
